It’s hard to believe summer is nearly over! For some children, the thought of returning to school and adjusting to new routines can bring feelings of anxiety. To help ease the transition and support kids in feeling their best, we’ve put together a list of helpful tips.
Re-establish routines
One of the many struggles reported by parents is getting their children back to a regular sleep schedule. Start adjusting their bedtime and wake-up schedule a couple of weeks before school starts so that they are fully prepared for the first week of school.
By gradually returning to a normal bedtime and wake-up routine, the adjustment to the new structure will be smoother and less jarring.
Communicate Openly
Practice active listening with your child and discover what they are excited about or worried about. Taking time to discuss their concerns can greatly reduce their anxiety and stress.
Organize and Prep a Workspace
Declutter and freshen a work study space for your child to use during the school year to complete projects and homework.
Add non-distracting, personalized touches to create a space your child will enjoy spending time in.
Prepare for the First Day
Review the school schedule, classroom locations, and the route to school with your child.
The night before the first day of school, prepare for the morning routine by laying out clothes, packing lunches, and gathering all necessary items.
Encourage a Positive Mindset
Reassure your child of their strengths and abilities and maintain a positive attitude toward the new school year.
Set realistic school goals and plan activities for motivation or celebrations when those goals are met.
